MVNO legend, Steve Bailey, joins FREI.

FREI continues its journey to take the telco industry by storm. We are South Africa’s ONLY Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) with an entirely in-house developed digital platform ecosystem and full intellectual property ownership.

At FREI, we are committed to growing our innovative and multifunctional team by incorporating hard-earned experience in the telco and financial space. We are therefore excited to welcome Steve Bailey as our newly appointed Chief Commercial Officer, offering his extensive MVNO experience and industry knowledge to the organisation.

Steve is well established as a respected thought leader in the MVNO space and has contributed to some of South Africa’s most prominent organisations including Cell C, Virgin Mobile, MVN-X, and Standard Bank Mobile.

We believe Steve’s contribution to FREI’s MVNO business development, marketing, and strategy will ensure that FREI’s clients are given the best chances of success in a highly competitive environment.

During an interview with Steve, we asked him to share his thoughts on the MVNO industry, and why he decided to join FREI.

“I have been in the industry since 2008 and am passionate about it. Every MVNO is different, and that is what makes it exciting.  FREI is the only MVNO platform built and operated in South Africa, so I seized the opportunity to join FREI!

Every company or brand should consider acquiring mobile telecom capabilities, and an MVNO represents an excellent opportunity to do that with complete flexibility and control.  Having your own “personalised” mobile service capability can add value to your existing products and help connect and digitise your customer interactions.

The market share of MVNOs in South Africa is currently only 2%.  This falls far short of market shares in other developed markets. I believe the MVNO space is set for growth over the next five years!  So even though an MVNO gives you the capabilities to realise your digitalisation and connectivity goals, having your own mobile products and service can grow your profit line too.

Due to changes from the impact of COVID-19 and working remotely, I have seen that companies and their employees are investing and spending much more on connectivity.  MVNOs have identified huge savings to their company’s internal costs by moving their staff onto the MVNO model rather than staying with the traditional network operators.  One client saved approximately R100 million a year using their MVNO to provide services for their staff”.

Going mobile opens new levels of customer interaction and brand loyalty regardless of the industry or community. This is an opportunity for many companies and communities to seize.
